The List

THE LIST

I do not need
The back of some crumpled receipt
Covered in hasty scribbles
For my running list of
Shortcomings.

I cannot forget those
As if they were
An ingredient for Saturday’s dinner.

They play on a never ending loop
In my mind,
Sometimes
Finding a scratch

And skipping—

Screeching
In the background
Of conversation
While I wonder
If anyone else can see
This list of reasons
I am unworthy
Playing in the green pools of my eyes.
